Brooke Demise Of The Crash takes their place in the story. Brooke holds herself to have lived through an ending, and to have come out the other side of it. No record names what she lost or confirms how much of it was real. She believes it, and that belief is enough to move her. She carries a grief she does not speak of often: people, she says, that she will not see again. How many, and who they were, she has not set down anywhere the Chronicle can find. She is looking for new ones now. That much is plain in how she moves through the world. She is building something. She has not named it yet, but the shape of it is familiar to anyone who has watched a person put a wall up where there was no wall before. She holds herself to be raising what she lost, stone by stone, so that the losing will not be the last word on it. Some call that grief. Some call it ambition. Brooke has not offered a name for it either.
