Cakey is not his true name, or so some who have met him say: the name Jay surfaces now and then, quietly, and he does not correct anyone who uses it, but Cakey is what he answers to and what he prefers. No record says where the name came from. He is not much for talking at first meeting, though those who have sat with him long enough find that changes, and changes noticeably. He is counted kind by most who know him. He sets store by time spent together, by conversation, by closeness with those he trusts. His earliest clear memory is of a house already burning, and of nothing before it. What came before that fire, he cannot say. He does not know whether the gap is long or short, and he has not found anyone who can tell him. Fire unsettles him still. He does not make much of this, but those who travel with him learn it in time.
