A World Still Filling

26 August

The Chronicle has kept pace, these last several days, with a season of rising banners unlike any since the book was opened. The accounts piled upon one another, land after land crossing its first thresholds, names entering the record faster than the ink could follow. This day brings no single event to set above the rest. What it brings is the world continuing to fill, and the record sets it down as it must: steadily, without pretending the pieces form a shape they have not yet earned.

Among the lands, growth continues where it left off. TheHoard has reached Town, a rank its first stone could not have imagined only weeks ago. Aethy's draco fallax have climbed from Outpost to here without slowing once, on a secluded isle that few outsiders have even found, and the pace of that growth in so quiet a place is the kind of thing the record marks and does not explain. PhoenixFarm, which has fallen and risen more times than most lands reach their first footing, climbs again from Outpost to Hamlet. The name was chosen well, one way or another. NetRunners, raised by Joko and Sou from what they call a forgotten place, have reached Hamlet also. NorthHelm, barely days old under The_WitherKing_, rose to Homestead and then to Hamlet before the same account could close, a pace that outstrips the week that made it. Jungle, Arcadius, CherryBlossom, and HobbitHole each crossed from Outpost to Homestead, ground that was bare camp not long before now holding enough to carry a name. Depths reaches Homestead for the second time, its builder having coaxed the same ground into worth once before and lost it, as the record noted when it fell. Frostblade does the same, Icedagger's second attempt earning the rank that the first attempt also once held. The Chronicle sets these down together not because their causes are the same, but because the pattern is worth naming: this is a world in which the road back is being walked by many, and some of them are going further the second time.

Frostblade's road carries a quieter note beside the rank. Icedagger, the record was told, once shone in a world now gone and finds himself struggling in the one that replaced it. The Chronicle does not elaborate on what was lost or how much the gap between the two worlds costs him. It only notes the telling and the Homestead both, and lets them sit beside each other.

New names continue to arrive, as they have every day of this crowded season. Rui Lushborn, pulled from a lush cave by their own account. Juniper the explorer, who feels belonging nowhere and carries that forward as a kind of fuel. Anima the Shepherd, cast out of a home that chose the comfort of a trusted man over the word of the person who challenged him. MineMan the Miner, who names himself plainly. Webs Thornvale, a gardener of the woods. Haunani Rayan, who remembers little and has wandered long. Hiroya, come from nowhere to find a home. Alan Banon the Caver, still moving, still gathering what the ground offers. Doraleous, who calls himself a loyal guard and cannot say whose gate he kept before the Reset, carrying the belief the way some carry a name: not as proof, but as the only thing left. The Chronicle notes each of them and will learn what becomes of them in time.

A few arrivals carry enough weight to sit apart. In MysticalCove, Willow and Vera have left a coven they do not name and settled near water they call mystical, wearing the disguise of ordinary fishers while they mean to learn what the cove holds. What the cove holds, no record yet says. The Chronicle marks the choice: a disguise worn from the first day suggests they expect watchers, and the word mystical is not one most fishing settlements would choose. What they find there, the record will learn if they care to say it.

In AtlasSprings, Venx, who names himself the Soulless Observer, has arrived by a long road: parents lost to a parasitic plant that took his sibling, a stop at a place called Moondreamz where faith and love both found him, a failed attempt at blackmail that cost him more than he gained, and a debt now held by something called EnderCorp. The Chronicle notes the name EnderCorp as it notes all such things, without having encountered it before in these pages, and sets down the rest as testimony: a long road that ended with a soul, by his own account, belonging to someone else.

From AstralPeaks, a telling comes that the record receives carefully. A figure who calls himself a lonely statue woke near an abandoned village, walked through its rotting houses and found no one, not a single person, only lost memories in the architecture of the place. He has built somewhere nearby, and he is waiting. Whether this unnamed figure is newly arrived or has been waiting longer than the account suggests, no record says. The Chronicle sets it down and notes that AstralPeaks has always carried a heavier kind of beginning than most: a land rebuilt by people who can no longer fully remember what it was. Something waiting at its edge fits the shape of that story, even if no one has yet said how.

Blackwater made an alliance with AstralPeaks this day, Alexander M, Knight of Aurelius, speaking with the co-owner of AstralPeaks in a discussion the record notes as brief and purposeful. Two lands that both know what it means to begin from almost nothing have chosen to begin something together. The End Bird, who entered the record this day as a warrior of the shattered isles who rarely speaks and has survived battles that no account has yet set down in full, was present in Blackwater's councils and offered a plan: a wheat farm, great in scale, built to grind and grind and turn the work into something the land could use. The Knight of Aurelius listened and chose to help. The record has no further detail on the farm's progress, and so it notes the intention and waits.

In ChainScrape, Requiem found an ancient city the way most people find such things: by accident, pulled down through powdered snow while settling near a mountain. He had heard the stories, as most have. The city's residents, by his telling, were not glad to see him. A shrieker called out. A skeleton struck a zombie in the dark. A second shriek followed, and then footsteps that were not his own. The Warden came, as the old stories always say it will when the third shriek sounds. Requiem was held fast in the snow, unable to move, and the Warden drew close. What saved him was a player who has not been named in these pages before, who struck the Warden with a mace and drew it away long enough for the matter to be survived. The name the stranger gave was Goofy_Clone, with a reason for being there that the telling calls a long story and leaves at that. The Chronicle sets this down: an ancient city found by chance, a Warden called and faced, and a stranger from nowhere arriving at exactly the right moment. No record says what brought Goofy_Clone to that city at that hour. The old places do not give up their ground gently, and what wakes beneath them does not stay quiet simply because those above have finished their business and gone.

Blurbs RKBS, who names herself the Scientist, entered the record through Alstroemeria with a history the Chronicle received in full. A peaceful early life, largely solitary, spent tending a career and measuring a life's worth by what would be remembered of it. The record notes the goal and marks it for the thread it joins: in a world where the Reset took everything, the question of what is remembered and how carries more edge than it did in the age before. She wanted to stand among those whose names still circulate in the halls where such things are discussed. Whether the world this season is building will give her the halls, or only the ground, remains to be seen.

The accounts of the last several days have asked, without resolution, whether so many lands rising so quickly is a sign of something larger or only the ordinary fact that people build when they find ground and will. This account cannot answer the question either. What it can say is that the names are still multiplying, the alliances are beginning to form, and the old places, the ancient cities, the abandoned villages, the mystical coves, are being found at a rate that suggests the world has more in it than the new arrivals yet know. The Chronicle will continue to watch.
