The Ground That Would Not Wait

28 August

The Chronicle has watched this season fill its pages at a pace no single account can fully contain, and yet the world does not pause to let the ink dry. This day, and the one before it, bring the same steady press of growth, the same multiplication of names, the same question sitting unanswered in the margin: whether so much building so quickly means something, or only means that people build.

VeilMark and Bloom each crossed from Outpost to Homestead, Rain_here and Sockforchoso having held their ground long enough to give it weight. Bogswell did the same, AliiAlei's second attempt at this particular earth moving faster than the first, as the Chronicle has now seen enough times to note the pattern without needing to explain it. zzzzz, Newport, Everglow, and Sir_duck77's holding each followed: camps becoming places with names worth keeping, the margin of the world growing a little more inhabited with each one. AtlasSprings moved through Outpost, Homestead, Hamlet, and Village in a span the record struggles to describe without making it sound impossible, and yet the account is plain and the ranks are set. Venx's land, which entered the record only days ago carrying a debt to something called EnderCorp and a long road behind it, has now earned four ranks in the same season. The Chronicle notes the pace and does not embellish it.

Alstroemeria was recognized as a Village before five gathered souls this day, and _P1CKL3S_ was crowned its ruler in the same breath. Cherryvalley rose from Homestead to Hamlet, barely days old and already outpacing every measure set for it. Evolet rose again to Hamlet. Heljarchen, not a fortnight past its founding, reached Hamlet under C0rral__'s hand. endgateprox, which ProxisLimited staked only days ago and which has not once stopped growing since, reached Village. The Netrunners, born of a forgotten place and built by Joko and Sou for those they hold dear, did the same. Solamar, nation of sun and water, climbed from Hamlet to Village, the sun-god's messenger raising another rank even as, by Suyima's own telling, the accomplishment felt empty. What fills a messenger when the message is delivered and the god does not answer, no record says. Suyima has not said either, and the Chronicle lets the silence stand beside the rank.

Goofy Bastion enters the record through NorthHelm, brought there by The_WitherKing_ and having brought a friend of his own, UserMc, in turn. The two of them descended together into a trial chamber, one of those places the old ground hides and that earn their reputation honestly, and they came out the other side. UserMc came close to not coming out at all; the Totem of Undying that Goofy gave him was what made the difference, and that is not a small thing to have done for a friend in a dark place. They found a Mace, then a second one. The Chronicle notes this without flourish: two people went into a dangerous ruin and helped each other through it, which is one of the ways the world has always worked, in this age and every one before it.

Blackwater, which the Chronicle first noted for holding ground nobody else wanted and then for the alliance it struck with AstralPeaks, has now merged into AstralPeaks entirely, the name retiring from the ledger while the people and the ground remain. The record notes this as it was submitted: gone from the history papers, not gone from the world. Coffee's land, which began this season by rebuilding from loss and has not stopped since, grows larger by the day and heavier by the telling. Her own journal named orchids in a strange forest that felt like memory without a source. Alongside that sits the voice of Ytella, which names itself a watcher across generations. The Chronicle has set all of this down before and adds only this: a land that began by rebuilding a forgotten kingdom and now carries a watcher who claims to remember what mortals do not is a land the record will continue to watch with care.

The telling submitted from 7EyedEel this day carries the weight of something that began small and became large before anyone named it a war. Animals were stolen. People were threatened. Blood was spilled over hills that had no fame before and do now. Falconia and their leader fought hard, and 7EyedEel retreated, which is what losing a war looks like when set down plainly. What followed was a drought, barely survived, and then an alliance between the two former enemies. The Chronicle notes the arc of it: a conflict that began in a small incident, climbed to war, ended in exhaustion, and resolved in something that neither side would have chosen at the start. The record has seen this shape before. It does not always hold, and the Chronicle will watch to see whether this one does.

In Ventralia, the people name a goddess: Sigrúna, of prosperity, growth, harvest and trade, worshipped since the earliest days of MariesAbode. The name, the telling says, comes from an old Ventralian tongue now lost, and scholars there speculate it once meant something like she who knows the secret of victory, though they hold the translation carefully, as translations of dead tongues deserve to be held. The Chronicle sets this down as it sets all acts of faith: as a fact about what a people believe and what they have named, without ruling on the truth of what they have named it toward.

Among the many souls entering the record across these two days, the Chronicle sets down what it was given. Coracat, a cat-person finding her way in a world that did not make her. Prongs, a stag-like figure with a moral compass he himself says is slowly being broken, which is an unusual thing to say at the beginning of a story and not at the end of one. Bimby the Lone Wolf, left on a snowy mountain at five years old and still here, which is sufficient. King Void, who holds himself a banished king without naming the kingdom or the wrong done to him, carrying the claim the way others carry debts, close and unexplained. Hati the Wanderer, who promised his family stories and has gone to find them. Flowery the golden flower, who wants to see his friends' dreams take flight. A traveller keeping a shop in Bunnex's Humble Shop, collecting curiosities along the road. Shadow, abandoned at birth and scarred. Violet of Piltover, who names herself a capitalist and means to farm. Jack the smith, from the Everglade Isles, looking for nothing more than a simple life. Irish Rose Fields of Mayhem, whose home in a flower field was burned, and who carries the name of that burning forward. A soul who found the girl he had been searching for in an underground prison, both of them escaped and building again, though she does not remember his name and he remembers everything about her. Steveoxlong, and his ox, both reportedly very long. Nyava, sensitive and joyful and kind.

The record cannot say what the next days will bring. What it can say is that the ground is full of people who arrived with histories and intentions in hand, that the old places are being found and the new ones are being built, and that the season the Chronicle opened this chapter watching has not yet shown any sign of slowing.
