Chapter I
Account 9
Banners Sworn and Unsaid
31 August
The Chronicle has watched this season fill its pages at a pace that has not slackened since the first account, and yet the days do not all press with the same urgency. This one brings a survey of many things at once: alliances struck and dissolved, new souls arriving from every kind of beginning, and a handful of moments that sit apart and ask for the longer sentence.
The_WitherKing_ has been busy with the work of empire in a way that name now demands. Alliances were made with PastaLand, Bogswell, Aethelgard, and 7EyedEel, and the Chronicle notes the last of these with particular interest: Alfie's land of the Seven-Eyed Eel, which entered the record carrying a war against Falconia and survived it into an unlikely peace with that same enemy, now finds itself allied with the north as well. Members were brought in, builders assigned, and the ground given specific instructions: Alto to the armory, Reflex to a castle that will serve as the capital. FrostBlade accepted a vassal's place when asked. With a vassal sworn and a capital under construction, the name was changed to EmpireOfNorthHelm, and the banner was raised before four gathered souls. The Chronicle sets this down as it was given: a land that weeks ago was a recent founding under The_WitherKing_'s hand has now framed itself as an empire, with alliances on four sides and stonework rising at its center.
Harper Serene is still there, housed under that same roof, and the record does not forget what the last account set down about him: the ruin in the dark forest he named without knowing how, the book in a script he cannot read but finds familiar, the spire of strange plants in the deep-blue trees to the north that the sun forced him to leave unfinished. The Chronicle will note when he goes back, if he does.
The_WitherKing_ and Goofy returned together to a trial chamber, fought, and sold what they brought out. The record does not have the detail of what was found there, only that the work was done and the coin spent on a new sector called the barracks. Goofy has now been into two trial chambers in the span of this season. The Chronicle notes what he carries out of them and continues to watch.
In MysticalCove, Willow and Vera, who entered the record disguised as ordinary fishers, have added three things to their story in the same short span. They found, by following a map of this still-forming world, a mystical swamp where another witch named Willow lives, and crossed the mountains to meet her. What was given between them the telling does not say in full, only that a gift was exchanged joyfully and that a ghast named Niffler now floats around their hut, offering what the telling calls a bird's eye view. The Chronicle notes this without elaborating on what a peaceful ghast means for a cove whose guardians wore a fisherman's disguise from the first day they arrived. Then Willow of MysticalCove was invited to join NorthHelm, and Vera agreed, and so they are citizens of an empire in the south while keeping their residence by the cove. They have also offered their skills to a neighboring city called Atlantis, which the record has not encountered by that name before. Whether the tensions between these cities the telling mentions are a figure of speech or a genuine description of the ground, no record yet says. What the Chronicle does set down plainly is that Willow and Vera have now tied their names and their coven together before their beloved cove, the lights dancing in the vines above them, and that two people who arrived wearing disguises have made themselves, in a short time, both married and surprisingly well-connected.
Niveisland, which the last account set down as a place founded on shared worship and the dream of unity, has already learned something about the gap between founding intentions and what people actually do with an open field. Farms offered freely to the community were stripped bare, not out of need but for profit, and the record notes the distinction because the person who kept the farms noted it. What Niveisland does about this going forward, the Chronicle will watch.
Aurevia is the name that carries the heaviest weight in this day's account, and the weight is the kind that comes from a thing attempted twice and then attempted a third time in quick succession. The ground .Jensen2021 has built on was cleared, lost, rebuilt, and lost again, and the Chronicle has noted each time. This day Aurevia stands as a Nation, the widest banner the land has ever raised, and the wild, which twice had the last word here, appears not to have gotten one this time. The Chronicle sets that down with the plainness the fact deserves.
What surrounds that fact is less settled. Aurevia2 was named a nation this same day, and Celestia, which the record has followed through three raisings of its own and one dissolved bond before this week, swore to that nation. Then Aurevia2 was dissolved before a single day had passed. Celestia withdrew twice, the Chronicle was told twice, and stands alone again. Why the nation lasted so briefly, and what passed between the swearing and the dissolving, no record says. The Chronicle sets down the shape of it: a banner raised, two nations bound, and the whole arrangement undone before the ink was dry. Celestia continues to accumulate the particular kind of history that comes from returning to things and then stepping away from them. Whether that is a pattern or a string of unrelated choices, lambfie has not said, and the Chronicle does not guess.
Among the new souls arriving this day and the one before, the record sets down what it was given. Coco settled in EmpireOfNorthHelm after years of travel, choosing a yellow house because yellow is her favorite color. The Chronicle finds no fault with that as a reason. Meme Legendary, of ZFighters, has come to train and to fight and to be a light others can rely on, which is a simple purpose and often the hardest one to keep. Itsuki the Journalist arrived through Infinity, journaling his days in the hope that writing down the present will eventually recover what the Reset took, which is one of the more practical responses to the forgetting the Chronicle has encountered. Silver is still lost and trying to understand where they are, which puts them in the company of most people in this season.
Umbra the Depth Warden was pulled from a river, sent by parents seeking a better life for her. Sulkufir the angler fish names a sea called Alcotomath, a name no record this Chronicle holds has ever carried, and the Reset leaves no way to find it. SQUID Seaborn was summoned back from whatever lies beyond death, its form shaped by the one who called it, and neither Squid nor the record knows what it was before. Goetia the Stalker has entered the record silent and strange, carrying poppies and a background no account explains. Fang Coll was cast out from the company of angels for overhearing what he should not have and being believed by no one, his wings clipped, and yet the telling says he still holds hope. The Chronicle sets this down beside other claims of origin beyond the ordinary reach of this world, noting that the people of this age arrive carrying crowns and wings and memories of other places in numbers that the old scribe's training did not prepare for.
Reina ran young from foster parents, alone with a gift since. Mellie the honey-bee left her hive for adventure and is not especially troubled by what she does not remember about herself. Amari arrives from the unknown, which is not unusual this season. Noar the Chaos Construct came out of underground cities at eighteen, walked dimensions that no map has named, and those who have watched him fight do not question what he says about it. Poporine holds a princess's title from a kingdom the Reset left no trace of, and means to build something again. Hecalyth the Divine Sovereign of Lysanthir names herself a woman who has outlived every certainty but one, and the Chronicle notes both the certainty she names and the way she names it: whatever awaits beyond death has already learned her name.
The ground is still filling. The alliances are still forming, and in at least one case dissolving before the page turned. The old places continue to give things up to those curious enough to look. The Chronicle turns the page and waits.
