The River and the Quiet After

2 October

This day the Chronicle turns again to Lysanthir, and makes no apology for it, because Lysanthir is where the day's weight settled, and to look elsewhere first would be to miss what the afternoon actually held.

There was no urgent task waiting for either of them. Hecalyth had said, almost as an afterthought, that they might go to the river. Aveline had looked at her the way a person looks when they have briefly forgotten that afternoons can simply be used. And so they went.

The river moves slowly beneath the trees not far from Lysanthir, and the grass along its bank is soft and slightly damp, and the light comes through the leaves in pieces. Hecalyth carried two rods. Aveline carried the small box of supplies and asked, with genuine curiosity, why the fish could not simply be offered the food without the hook. Hecalyth considered the question seriously before answering that the fish would eat it and leave. Aveline said that seemed unfair. Hecalyth said fishing rarely was.

What followed was the kind of instruction that proceeds without hurry. Hecalyth showed Aveline how to attach the hook, how much bait was enough (not the entire meal, not crumbs, something in between), and how to cast without fighting the rod's own motion. The first cast landed beside them on the bank. Aveline said she thought the river had moved. Hecalyth laughed. Not loudly. Just enough that the warmth in it carried. The second cast, with Hecalyth's hands briefly guiding hers, landed neatly in the water, and Aveline's quiet satisfaction at that small success is the kind of thing the record keeps because it is exactly as ordinary and not ordinary as it sounds.

Aveline caught a fish. She looked delighted. Hecalyth smiled. They laughed together about what to do with it, and then returned to the bank and stayed there as the sun began to descend behind the trees. The conversations that followed were the kind that are easy to have beside water at the end of an afternoon: food, books, places seen, strange things encountered, all the small details that become easier to carry when shared. Aveline said she thought she liked doing nothing. Hecalyth, watching the water, said she thought she liked it too.

The Chronicle has followed Hecalyth across a full season of duties and formal headings and moments she faced alone. It notes here, without elaboration, that she spent an afternoon at a river and found it sufficient. When the light had gone to gold and red across the water and neither of them seemed eager to leave, Hecalyth rose and offered her hand. Aveline took it. They walked back to Lysanthir as the evening settled, and the account does not follow them further than the walk home, because the dinner that came after is another story for another day, and the record knows when to close its page.

Elsewhere the realm received new voices, as this season has made its habit.

From TaskForce141 come two moon hybrid pups, twin sisters, who enter the record together and are named together: Angel and Angel Moon Princess, of the Moon Force. They are shy and calm-natured, protective of each other in the way that twins sometimes are, and the record notes that the more guarded of the two will snap and bite if it comes to it. They love to sing. They love to be themselves when the world allows it. They find new friendships hard and warm into them slowly, and the Chronicle, which has now set down Luna Moon Princess of the same broad lineage and something of the same careful nature, marks the accumulation without drawing a line between them. What connection, if any, the Moon Force carries in this world, no record yet says.

From kuvaki enters the hollow knight, the one that fallen: a man born of a prestige family, carrying in his body a strength the telling calls monstrous. The record sets him down as he was given, large and capable and arrived, and waits to learn what he will do with what he was born into.

Melina the Forgotten enters without a land she can name, traveling thousands of miles without memory of purpose. She has settled, the account says, and means to make the best of what she knows. The Chronicle, which has kept this season's long ledger of arrivals shaped by emptiness, the forgotten name, the sealed vault, the memory glimpsed and lost again, places Melina beside them all with the attention that repetition earns. A person who does not know her purpose and has chosen to settle anyway and wait for it: that is not nothing. The record will watch for what finds her.
